AfterMath Tutors

Assist students of all ages with K-college-level math topics depending upon your skill and comfort level such as: fractions, decimals, percentages, pre- and Algebra 1&2, geometry, Trigonometry, pre-Calculus and Calculus. After-school hours during the school year.

Complete and return an AfterMath volunteer application where you wish to serve.

Calling Art Lovers: Drop-in Painting Coordinators Needed

Share your love of art in an informal, library setting. We are looking for two volunteers who will be working together in a team, to support the popular “Drop-in Watercolor Painting” program held on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of most months. Volunteers will set up the room with art supplies (provided by PPLD); monitor supply needs; interact with program participants; take photos of projects; track attendance and report participant feedback.

Skills and Abilities Required:

You need to be outgoing and friendly, enjoy interacting with patrons and staff, as well as committed and able to keep a set schedule. Experience with painting is not required -- We will provide any training you need.


In your application, please give your availability, specifically, if you are available both Thursdays, or only available on the 1st or 3rd Thursday.

Reports To: The East Makerspace Librarian

This program is held at the East Library, on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of most months, 6-9 p.m.

Friends Book Sale - Room Monitors

Perfect for individuals who want a one-time volunteer experience. We need people to monitor the rooms to straighten up books, consolidate boxes, direct room traffic, and keep the areas tidy.

Friends Book Sale - Set Up Crew

Perfect for individuals or groups who want a one-time volunteer experience. We need help setting up for our semi-annual book sale. Set up tables and organize books in both the Community Room and the Children's Room. The pace is fast, the room can get hot, and the boxes may be dirty, please dress accordingly.

Thursday, March 12, 2020, We will be working from 9 a.m. - noon. Volunteer when you are available, we can be flexible with your schedule.

Friends Book Sale - Tear Down Crew

Perfect for individuals, groups or families who want a one-time volunteer experience. This crew takes care of emptying boxes of books into large bins for transport, tearing down book boxes and storing them for future use, and cleaning the room as needed. Must be able to lift 25-30 pound boxes. The pace is fast, the room can get hot, and the boxes may be dirty, please dress accordingly.

Monday, March 16, 2020, We will start working at 1 p.m. and anticipate being finished round 3 p.m. , Volunteer when you are available, we can be flexible with your schedule.

Friends Book Store Clerks

Help out at the newly remodeled Friends Book Stores at Library 21c and East Libraries. Volunteers staff the book store, display books, process cash register sales, accept book donations, give out Friends memberships and help customers.

The bookstores are open 7 days a week, with shifts in 2-3 hour blocks of 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., 1 p.m. - 4 p.m., and 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. , Availability varies by location.

Friends Office Assistant

Friends need one or two assistants to perform general office and computer related tasks. Duties will include copying, inventorying supplies, transporting carts of books, shelving books, entering data into spreadsheets, performing internet lookups, running errands and general light office clean-up. Must have working knowledge of Microsoft Office and internet research methods.

Tuesdays and Fridays, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Friends Online Book Scanners

Have a couple of hours free every week? Friends seeks detail-oriented, tech-savvy volunteers to scan book donations and discards for books to sell on Friends Amazon store. Training provided.

Mon, Wed or Fri from 9 a.m.-noon or 1-4 p.m.; , Sat. from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m

Holds Processor/Filer

Use computer to trap holds and print the hold slip; match hold slip to book, label the hold slip and place the book in correct bin or Holds shelf, file item.

2-5 p.m. Sunday

Holds Processors/Shelvers

Serve behind the scenes a few hours a week to assist staff with processing and transferring books patrons have requested. Vounteers will (tasks vary from branch to branch) locate, and retrieve books on the shelves, or empty bins, discharge items with a computer device, shelve materials on the HOLDS shelves or book truck, and/or place materials in bins to go to other libraries. Volunteers at Penrose Library and Mobile Library Services will have free parking!

East Volunteers are needed Monday and Tuesday afternoons (2-5) and Wednesday and Friday mornings 8:30 - 11:30.

Library Explorers Craft Program Set Up

One or two volunteers are needed to help staff set up and tear down for the Library Explorers craft programs. Volunteers will also assist patrons with completing a craft. Volunteers should have ability to move supplies on a platform truck and in large plastic totes. They will also move around the room and assist patrons with detailed tasks. Should enjoy working with special needs individuals.

Library Helper Volunteer Position Description


Reading Buddies Volunteer

Teens are needed to help children retain and improve reading skills over the summer. Teens will listen to a child read aloud, read with a child or assist children in selecting reading materials and share their enthusiasm for reading. When not engaged in study buddies activities, volunteers will do additional tasks.

Volunteers should have excellent reading skills, and the ability to communicate with children and adults, and follow directions.

Must attend a training session and commit to one shift per week.

Teen Advisory Board

Teen Advisory Board meet monthly or more to suggest topics, and plan and host programs and services for teens.
